Phnom Penh and the cambodian wedding party
We arrived in Phnom Penh and we were very happy to be picked up from Ravith ( a relative of Wischiro ). we were brought to our hotel, next to his wife’s home. Around our guesthouse was beside nothing just nothing. We could not even catch a tuktuk there. The road was just dark in the night and hardly ever a car is driving along. The first night we had a SUKI-SOUP, after Ravith gave us a ride.
The next day there was the wedding ceremony. It started at 2 P.M. and some guys were already drunk. However, as it really start everybody was quiet. It was piping hot and we were sitting there (with jeans and a blouse) listening to the preast. Everything in khmer of course. Sometimes we had to pray, sometimes there were some musician playing something on their flutes or somebody was singing. The bride Sreymom looked beautiful with a traditional dress and the groom in the same colour as her. There was a photographer who took some photos of the couple, but also from me ’cause he probably found it funny to see some europeans there. After a while we were pleased to find a table and start the dinner. It was a yammie fish with a nice curry sauce. It was still very hot and we were glad to leave from this place after the meal.
The next day it started already at 7 A.M. (I also though he was kidding – but he was not). it really began that early. this day was supposed to be more various than the day before. First there were also a speech again from the preast (I think), and after a short time we were supposed to get a bucket of fruits, vegetables and so on. Wischiro and me got a bucket of beercans and we had to walk a couple hundred meter along the road and bring it back again. I am still not sure what the point was of that. Maybe I ll find out later. Afterwards we had breakfast (i mean it was still early, like 8 A.M.) The breakfast in Cambodia is usually with soup, chicken and we were lucky and we also got “nom tschegwai”. After the meal there was also a ceremony again, monks were sitting beside the couple and everybody was praying. Sorry I really didnt get it, was it was about. Afterwards there was the story with cutting their hair. A few people had to cut the groom and the bride s hair to leave the past times in the past. Appearently, this is very traditional. The next part of the wedding was a comedian making fun of all people. He looked very gay and I was happy to know that he was comedian. Appereantly it was very funny, I didnt get a word … but somehow interesting to look at the people who thought it was funny. we were the only one who were not laughing though. The next thing was the get a red “band” on their wrists to wish everlasting love (as far as I got it). that was the morning of the wedding. For lunch we got another big plate of fish with rice.
In the afternoon we moved to another hotel, had to get our hair done and we arrived 2 hours late of the evening part of the wedding. At least our hair were beautiful and our dress astonishing. HAHA. However, so many people were there almost anybody have been missing us. WE missed the first one or two course at the dinner though. after the dinner there was a band playing some khmer rock n roll, but also techno and traditional tunes. Some people were dancing I was rather standing and folow everything from the background. At around 10 P.M. when I wanted to get myself another glass of whisky, unfortunately they removed everything already. It was a very interesting and special experience attending a cambodian wedding. Therefore I would like to thank Sreymom and Ravith again for the invitation and wish them the best for their future.
